Deep Tissue Massage

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is an effective form of treatment for a variety of different conditions. It goes a lot further than your general relaxation massage. Deep tissue massage involves realigning the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue through intense, deep finger pressure and slow strokes on tensioned areas. Adhesions are generally present when tension occurs. Breaking down these adhesions in the tensioned areas will help to relieve pain and restore movement. You may experience a little bit of pain but it should not be so much that it is overbearing, so ensure you let your therapist know so they can give you the right treatment.

What is the history of deep tissue massage?

The people of the Far East as well as the Egyptians and Greeks initially discovered deep tissue massage. Today’s deep tissue massage closely resembles more of the Swedish massage than any other.

Physicians in Canada first developed deep tissue massage in the 1800’s. In 1949 a set of guidelines were set out for the technique of deep tissue massage by doctor Therese Phimmer. From this point onwards, deep tissue massage has weaved its way into qualifications and other therapies such as sports medicine as well as physical therapy to manage chronic pain and soft tissue injuries.

What is the history and culture behind massage in Australia?

In Australia, massage is the largest complementary medical profession in regards to utilisation by the public, the number of providers and practitioners as well as constantly being brought into the health care system. Massage therapists are a major treatment provider for health services in Australia. In addition to the development of massage within the health care setting, due to the sporting nature of Australia and in particular Melbourne, deep tissue massage has become popular with athletes, amateur sports persons and the general population due to its multiple performance and health benefits.

What are the benefits of deep tissue massage?

Receiving deep tissue massage on a regular basis can provide a multitude of benefits for you not only physically but also psychologically in order for your mind and body to relax.
